How to Mop the Old-Fashioned Way

If your mother is German, or perhaps just from Old Europe, you may never have seen a mop as you grew up. No, your mother simply mopped the old-fashioned way--on her hands and knees. And it turns out that, despite the new technology, that may just be the way to go if you like to be thorough and want to reach well into every corner. As an extra bonus that's not so old-fashioned, you'll get more exercise this way.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

 • Bucket
 •
Old small towel to use as rag
 •
Warm or hot water
 •
Dishwashing detergent
 •
White vinegar (optional)

Step1
Squirt detergent into a bucket. Fill with warm or hot water. A splash of white vinegar is optional. Make sure the floor is swept before you begin.
Step2
Make sure all obstacles are removed. Immerse rag or towel into water. On your hands and knees, begin scrubbing at one end of the room. Use a circular motion. You don't have to press too hard.
Step3
Use the towel edge to reach into every corner and every floor edge. Slide towel under appliances (if in the kitchen, oven or refrigerator) to the extent that it is possible. Slide between things (for example, between the refrigerator and cabinets) as much as possible. One idea is to use a stick to push the rag along in these tight spaces.
Step4
In between scrubbings, dip rag (to rinse anything that gathers) and squeeze or wring out with both hands. Begin scrubbing again. Move gradually across the floor to your final spot, where you have access to an exit from the room.
Step5
Let floor dry. Pour out the bucket water and hang the towel to dry. Then appreciate the shiny, thorough job you have done. Return any furniture to room as needed.
