Bikram yoga, or “hot yoga,” is a great way to lose weight or get in shape. Named after its founder, Bikram Choudhury, Bikram yoga is a series of 26 poses and two breathing exercises, performed in a room that’s heated to 105 degrees. The heat improves circulation, causes sweat that eliminates body toxins, and allows muscles to relax so you can sink more deeply into your poses. Because the poses are fairly basic, this is a good form of yoga for beginners, but students of all abilities are welcome. Read on to learn how to do Bikram yoga.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  •
Water bottle
  •
Large bath towel
  1. Step 1

Find a local center that teaches Bikram yoga. Unlike other forms of yoga, Bikram needs to be practiced in a studio.

  2. Step 2

On the day of your class, make sure to drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself, and try not to eat for two hours before.

  3. Step 3

Wear light, stretchy clothing, since you will sweat. Tank tops and running shorts are good bets. Some studios allow swimsuits, but call ahead to make sure if you plan on wearing one.

  4. Step 4

At the studio, fill up your water bottle and set up your mat in a spot where you’re comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Follow your instructor’s lead. Bikram is a beginning series so even yoga newbies should be able to follow along. Classes start with standing poses, then move to backbends, forward bends and twists.

  6. Step 6

When you start to sweat, position your towel under you so the sweat hits the towel, not the studio floor.

  7. Step 7

After class, make sure you re-hydrate with plenty of water to replace the fluid you lost during your workout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Classes are generally 90 minutes long.
  • Because the heat relaxes your muscles so much, be sure you don't push yourself into any stretch that you're not comfortable doing, or you could risk injury.
  •
Can't stand the heat? It's perfectly acceptable to take a break and lie on your mat for as long as you need to recover.
