How to win a student council election

Contrary to popular opinion, winning a student council election isn't all about popularity. If you can show the other students that you care about their opinions and will represent them, you will gain their support. Be down to earth and accessible, but be clear about your goals.

Come up with catchy, funny posters. The goal of student council posters is to catch people's eyes and make them remember you. If you list your platform positions on your posters, do it succinctly, with clear powerful sentences that are easy to remember.

Go out and talk to people. Don't be pushy, but get the word out to as many people as you can that you are running for student council elections. Answer any questions you are asked and be prepared to explain your position on key issues your school is facing.

    • 3

Know the hot-button issues. School uniforms, extracurricular activities and lunches are some of the issues that your classmates are likely to care about. Consider passing out a survey to find out which issues students care most about.

    • 4

If you have to give a speech, be sure to memorize it ahead of time. Deliver it in a relaxed, confident but casual manner. Speak clearly, but don't be stiff.

    • 5

If you have to engage in a debate, speak clearly and simply. Be eloquent, but don't attempt to dazzle your opponent with your brilliant vocabulary or speak over the heads of your audience. Students tend to respond best to speeches that are simple and to the point.

    • 6

Always be courteous to your opponents. Take the high ground and try to win through emphasizing your own strengths as a candidate.
