UGG boots have been around for quite some time, but didn't take off as a fashion statement until recently. How much of a fashion statement they are is debatable, but one thing is for sure--you have to know how to wear them and wear them in a way that looks best on your body type, not on your favorite celebrity.

1. Get shopping. Pick a pair of UGGs in the color and style that best fits your lifestyle. They come in a slew of styles, from plain and lace-up to knee-highs, clogs and slippers. Depending on what you plan on wearing them for, you can have a whole collection of UGGs.

2. Wearing them with skinny jeans (if you are a female) seems to be the latest craze, but UGGs can be worn with any type of jean. However, contrary to popular opinion, the traditional UGG is not accepted as appropriate office wear, for nice restaurants or as a replacement for couture footwear. UGG footwear were created for comfort as a work shoe and to wear around the house on colder days to keep the feet toasty. It was not created to wear with business suits or nice dresses and looks inappropriate when paired with formal attire.

3. Although women wear UGG boots with shorts and skirts, it really isn't a flattering look, particularly if your legs are heavier. The clunky style of the boot makes your legs look heavier than they are.

4. You shouldn't wear UGGs in wet or muddy conditions. While they are warm, they do not have water-repellent qualities and will instead absorb and hold the moisture. A similar problem is caused when wearing UGGs in warm conditions. Sweat from feet will absorb into the lining of the boot and cause an unpleasant odor.

5. Choose the color of UGGs with care. Remember that lighter fabrics tend to look dirty more quickly. Because they are worn outside of pants, you can't hide a dirty UGG.

• On the whole, clunky shoes tend to make the legs look heavier, so keep that in mind when considering wearing UGGs with a pair of shorts.

• Using a waterproof spray on UGGs will help them last longer. It may turn the fabric a little darker in color and cause the texture to become a little rougher. However, these slight changes are often worth it because it helps the boots last longer.
