Chivalry is not dead. The act of tipping one's hat is an old-fashioned custom, acknowledging and showing respect for a lady, a passerby or a new acquaintance. Tipping the hat has fallen out of fashion since the wearing of men's hats began falling out of fashion and hats are no longer part of the everyday essential in a man's wardrobe. But you can still use it now, in this modern day. It's a romantic and respectful notion, to offer a tip of the hat when dressed up formally. Here are the basic moves in case you ever need them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Catch their eye when you see someone coming whom you'd like to show acknowledgment by a tip of the hat.
Step2
Reach above your right eye and take the brim of your hat between your thumb and first two fingers. Maintain eye contact and nod slightly while pulling up on your hat so the front brim lifts about as high as the top of your forehead. Back brim should stay in place.
Step3
Pull the hat back down where it was, and return your hand back to your side. You have accomplished the task.
Step4
Make a bigger tip of the hat by holding the brim of the hat in the same manner and lifting the hat all the way off the head for a brief moment (holding it slightly to the side of the head) and then replacing it back on the head. It should be a smooth movement, done again with a slight nod and while maintaining eye contact and smiling.
Step5
Show deep respect by keeping your tipped hat removed while bowing slightly as a lady passes you, replacing your hat on your head only after she has passed you and is no longer looking at you.
