Choose the right actions. Buy a gym membership. Read a book. Play basketball with your son or daughter. Leave nothing to chance. All these things are the right actions and will help improve your outlook.

    • 2

Make healthy choices. Burnout doesn't always mean it's time to change careers. If you want to work better at your job consider the regime of different forms of exercise. Try going to the gym for a few weeks, maybe even lose a few pounds, but definitely stick to your regime. You are exercising your mind here, not just the body. It relieves stress in a significant way by focusing on something and doing it.

Use the relationships you have to gain peace of mind. Someone out there has felt like you before, and it will help to talk to people with similar problems. There are hundreds of millions of people employed in some way, so someone must have some trade secret on surviving burnout. By talking about it you are thinking about it—even if you don't get good advice.

Refill the well. If you are empty of desire for a moment, it’s time to change things up. Do more family activities, volunteer at local organizations and participate in activities that you enjoy. You should also meet people and share stories. These are things you might have avoided before, perhaps isolating yourself and only talking to friends and family. Do them not for material gain but for emotional gain, for a new perspective on the world. It takes time, but soon these small steps will be the building blocks of defeating burnout. It can all be fun. By having a regimen and refilling the well you will be ahead of the pack. You will stand out, and work will become easier.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes burnout can be more common with a bad job, so choose what matters to you—the job or happiness—and take action.

  • Choosing not to work isn't the right action to take, unless you feel you've earned it.
