How to Treat Eczema on Babies

For babies, a diagnosis of eczema can describe any number of skin conditions that cause dry itchy skin. Your pediatrician may also call this ailment atopic dermatitis and is characterized by thickened scaly patches of skin. Eczema can be found on the babies scalp, arms, legs, chest, forehead, or cheek. In severe cases, it can become blistery and ooze. Infant eczema usually disappears by the end of the first year, but meanwhile it makes babies rather uncomfortable.       Avoid skin irritants. Use non-allergic laundry detergents and skin cleansers on the baby. Make sure that everything the baby comes in contact with is washed with non-allergic detergent. This may include the parents’ shirts.

      Keep skin moisturized. Use lotions and cremes on the babies skin to keep it from drying out. Eucerin and Aveeno baby lotion are recommended.

      Keep your baby from scratching. When the baby becomes irritated by the eczema, and especially when they are sleepy, they will claw at themselves. Keep their fingernails neatly trimmed and use sock or mittens on their hands if necessary.

      Apply cool compresses. If a child seems especially irritated by an eczema breakout, apply a cook compress to skin to soothe them. Afterwards, apply creme to the area to keep it moist.

      Consult your pediatrician. Always see the pediatrician and do not attempt to self diagnose eczema. A rash on a baby can signal any number of ailments and should be addressed by a doctor. For a sever form of eczema, a doctor an also prescribe antihistamines for the baby.
