How to wash silk garments

Silk is one of the most popular fabrics in the world. Many people turn to the dry cleaners, but you can safely wash silk garments at home. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Lukewarm water
  • <br>Mild detergent
  • <br>Sponge
  • <br>1/4 cup vinegar
  • <br>1 cup cool water
  • <br>Absorbent towel

Instructions

    • 1

      Create a solution of one gallon of lukewarm water to one tablespoon of mild detergent. Use this solution to test the garment in an inconspicuous area. If color fades or transfers, do not proceed.

      After testing for colorfastness, soak the garment in the lukewarm solution for ten minutes.

      If there are any spots, use a clean sponge dipped into the solution to gently rub the stain.

      To rinse, soak the silk garment in a solution of one gallon of cool water and 1/4 cup of vinegar. The vinegar will help restore the characteristic shine to the silk.

      Remove the garment from the rinse solution and lay flat on an absorbent towel. Roll the towel around the garment and squeeze gently to remove excess water. Unroll the towel and lay garment flat to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use bleach on silk.

  • Only use an iron on low heat.
