How to Minimize the Need for Oven Cleaning

Cleaning ovens the old-fashioned way is a pretty loathsome chore, whereas using the self-cleaning function sucks up lots of energy and ties up your oven for hours. But there's an incredibly simple way to reduce the lion's share of spills and messes inside your oven. Just follow these steps to get your oven set up for simple, occasional maintenance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

 • Oversized cookie sheet
 •
Aluminum foil
 •
Dishrag
 •
Dish soap

Step1
Tear off 2 sheets of aluminum foil, each one slightly longer than the cookie sheet. Lay them over the cookie sheet so that they overlap slightly in the middle and crimp them around the edges so that they stay in place firmly and cover the entire cookie sheet surface, including the edges.
Step2
Place the foil-covered cookie sheet on the bottom rack of the oven. Cook as you normally would after this, leaving the cookie sheet below to collect spills and drips.
Step3
Every time you use your oven, take a quick moment to glance at the foil. If it is only lightly soiled, feel free to re-use it. If it's heavily soiled, it's time to either clean or replace the foil. Replacing the foil is the fastest and easiest method; just crumple the dirty foil and replace it as you did in step one. But you can also put the cookie sheet in the sink, run very hot water over it and attempt to wipe the mess away with a soapy dishcloth. If you clean it, dry it thoroughly before putting it back in the oven.

Tips & Warnings

 • Do not attempt to substitute plastic or paper wraps for aluminum foil when using this method.
