Zinnias are an old-fashioned garden bloom that only flower annually, but they are quick and easy to grow. They also make great cut flowers in flower arrangements and they repel quite a few pests in the garden, too.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Zinnia seedlings or seeds
  • <br>A flower garden or planting area

Step1
You can sow zinnia seeds as soon as it warms up and there's no danger of frost. Sow about a 1/4-inch deep and wait for the seedlings to come up. Thin if necessary, but you can leave them close together for a fuller look in the garden. Cut off the dead flowers to encourage growth and more flowers.
Step2
Zinnias do well with just about all flowers and vegetables and they attract wasps and hoverflies, which are beneficial insects in the garden. They attract all kinds of butterflies as well.
Step3
Zinnias have no known enemies, so plant freely throughout the garden.
Step4
Zinnias love full sun and well-drained soil. They actually thrive in hot summer weather, so they are great for warm climates. If you let some of your zinnias go to seed, they will attract goldfinches and other birds to the garden.
Step5
Let your children grow some zinnias. They are so easy to grow that kids will soon find that they love gardening.
