How to tip a favorite waiter during the christmas holidays

Waiting tables is tough, especially during the busy holidays. If you frequent a particular restaurant and have received excellent service from a particular server, it's kind to pass on a tip for their special attention during the holiday season.

Plan it out beforehand. Shoving some extra cash in with the bill is still certainly generous, but can be perceived as an afterthought. Plus, as most servers are required to pool their tips, if other servers get wind of an extra generous tip, there may be some rallying for a share.

    • 2

Decide how you would like to show your appreciation. If you've had conversations with your server, you may know enough about them to purchase a gift card to their favorite store. Even from small mentions, you may be able to pick up a clue; a student may need a bookstore gift card, a newlywed could use one to a linens store. Showing you put some extra effort in gives your gift added value to the recipient.

    • 3

Make sure to give a gift of money in cash. Some proud employees may feel awkward cashing a check from guests they consider to be friends. Above all though, do not add it to a tip via credit card--there's nothing tackier.

    • 4

Put your gift in a card. Not only does it eliminate the awkwardness of handing over a gift out in the open, it makes the recipient feel like you truly thought about them.

    • 5

Be discreet. If you know the server will be the one to pick up the check envelope (and not a hostess or busser), leave it there. If you're not sure, give it to the server directly, but on your way out so that it is nonchalant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that gifts are about appreciation, not about getting something back. You should only tip a server something extra during the holidays if you feel they've done an exceptional job or if you've built a relationship with them. Don't tip just because you're hoping they'll show you favor during future visits or pass on discounts.
