Though every home is different, there are basic guidelines you can follow to safely childproof a home.

From Quick Guide: Child Safety at Home
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Be aware that the most dangerous and common things within children's reach are electrical outlets, wires and plugs. Try and keep powerstrips out of reach. Plug all empty sockets with plastic outlet protectors and make sure all accessible wires are not frayed or damaged as they can cause serious harm if touched.

  2. Step 2

Consider that kitchen cabinets and drawers of all kinds, including coffee table and entertainment center drawers, can contain hazardous material such as scissors or small swallowable objects. Use cabinet and drawer safety lock (childproof) devices such as plastic latches or magnet devices. These can be found at any large discount store or a store that provides children's products.

  3. Step 3

Use a baby gate on any stairs to keep your children from going up and down the stairs.

  4. Step 4

Try and remove all sharp-edged surfaces from areas where your children frequent. This includes end tables, filing cabinets and coffee tables. If you have these items and want to keep them, consider buying "rounders," which are plastic attachments that turn sharp edges into round edges.

  5. Step 5

Keep all poisonous and hazardous material in high, hard-to-reach places so if your child does get into the cabinets, they cannot eat or drink anything poisonous.

  6. Step 6

Use common sense: don't put glass, scissors, paper clips or anything dangerous where your child can pick it up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask around: other mothers will have great ideas. Check online for local mother's groups or look at blogs and chats about parenting.
