Step 1
Do your research. Research the different schools in your area. You may want to send your child to a Montessori school, a play-based preschool, a cooperative school or a quaint little preschool that manages to a combination of all the different types of schools. Whatever preschool you choose make you are comfortable with your choice. It is unwise to second guess your parental instinct.
-
Step 2
Correspond with your child's teacher weekly in order to stay well informed. This could be with a note, email, phone call or in person. The method of correspondence is not as important as the correspondence itself.
-
Step 3
Talk to your child and listen. Open up the lines of communication by asking your child open ended questions about his day at preschool.
-
Step 4
Watch for clues. Many preschoolers are not particularly crazy about leaving the comfort of home to go somewhere unfamiliar, but you should be able to read your child's mood and body language to decide if she is truly happy at preschool or if there are issues that should be addressed. You will want to stay informed and contact your child's school if there are changes in her mood or behavior.
-
Step 5
Befriend other positive parents of preschoolers at the same school. Perhaps you won't always remember everything, but it can help you to stay on top of things. If you have another parent to remind you of little Suzy's upcoming classroom play, it will be easier to stay informed.
-
Step 6
Volunteer at your child's preschool. Offer to read a story to the class, serve lunch or work the school carnival. By volunteering you are staying in the "loop" and you will be a well informed parent for preschool.
