Things You'll Need:
- A toddler toothbrush
-
Step 1
Understand that the most important thing for your toddler to learn is to open his or her mouth and keep it open. You can turn this into a game and practice without the toothbrush, that way when it's time to use the toothbrush, your toddler will be a pro at opening his or her mouth.
-
Step 2
Hold your toothbrush and your toddler's toothbrush. At first, you'll have to hold both brushes. When your toddler is used to the routine, he or she can hold the brush from the beginning.
-
Step 3
Apply toothpaste to both brushes.
-
Step 4
Brush your own teeth and make sure your toddler is watching.
-
Step 5
Tell your toddler to open his or her mouth and brush as many teeth as you can before your toddler tries to take the toothbrush. If the toddler takes the toothbrush, try to guide his/her hand and keep brushing.
-
Step 6
When done, teach your child to spit into the sink. This is an important step, because most toddlers won't want to let go of the brush, so it's a way to get them excited about something else and then you can take the brush away without a struggle.
