How to Do Doga

We've heard of people taking their dogs to dog psychologists, or to "doggie dentists," and now the rage is exposing pups to yoga. Called "doga," it's become very popular in London and New York City, and soon there will be places to do doga all around the country, because many of the exercises are the same as you do in yoga. People who have done doga found that it allows them to have quality time with their dogs while at the same time, enjoying the benefits of yoga. Here are a few tips to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are already doing yoga, check with your instructor about including your dog in the next session. If the instructor has never heard of doga, explain that it is a new concept that is becoming fashionable and it represents a new avenue to explore. Further, there are no new exercises to learn because the dog will be encouraged to participate with you while you proceed through your yoga routine.

  2. Step 2

Remember that doga is a learning experience for both you and your dog because he has been doing a form of yoga all his life. He stretches and achieves calmness in many of the ways you have learned to do in your yoga training.

  3. Step 3

Be sure you walk your dog before taking him to his first class. It will help burn off energy in both of you and you two will be calmer for your session. For all intents, this is the beginning of the bonding elements of doga, one of the most important reasons for including your dog.

  4. Step 4

Every dog has his own idiosyncrasies and you will need to be aware of them as you two become involved with doga. For example, some dogs are not comfortable being picked up in a certain way, or dislikes being rubbed in a particular area. One of the purposes of doga is for you to be "at one" with your pet, so there are no requirements that will infringe on his likes and dislikes.

  5. Step 5

Certain exercise that you will do requires that you massage your dog with deep, penetrating strokes. He will enjoy this as long as you do not pinch or otherwise hurt him. Remember all of the exercises you will do with your dog are meant to instill calmness in both of you.

  6. Step 6

In doga poses, many of them are just like what they do when they loll around and are at peace with the world. For example, in what is called the savasana relaxation pose, the dog lies on his back while you gently rub his belly. To a dog, it's pure heaven.

  7. Step 7

If your dog is high-strung by nature, doga may be the best thing you can do for him. It all starts with your concentrating on being calm, because your dog will sense that and he will act accordingly.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your dog is aggressive or fundamentally not trainable, doga may not be appropriate. Talk with your veterinarian about your plans before you act.
