      Enjoy a day at the beach. The coastal waters near Newport provide myriad beaches that are terrific for paddling and splashing around as well as building sandcastles. Be sure to pack sunscreen, as the sun is fierce especially on cloudy days. Don't plan on swimming--the Pacific is very cold along these shores.

      Enjoy a fun meal. Joe's Crab Shack has a great atmosphere for families and couples alike. The earlier dining hour is great for kids--noisy and fun with dancing waiters and a dessert that the kids get to paint. The later evening crowd is full of rowdy groups celebrating birthdays and bridal showers. The restaurant is located right of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and provides valet parking for a minimal fee (see Resources for detailed location information and maps).

      Trek over to the mall. There's great shopping at Fashion Island Mall. There's Bloomingdale's, Macy's and Nordstrom (coming soon). These anchor stores are connected by an outdoor mall that's filled with lots of selections from Martin & Osa to Children's Place to Barnes & Noble. There's also a wide selection of restaurants to rest and reinvigorate before hitting the mall again. The kids will love the carousel that's right outside the Macy's entrance.

      Go whale watching. Whales migrate right past this section of the California coast line. The season for whale watching starts in December and ends in April. You can join a tour that takes you right out into the ocean to get an up-close perspective on these magnificent creatures.

      Window shop the luxury cars. Newport Beach is an upscale area that where very luxurious cars are sold. Take a walk down auto row and goggle at the Rolls Royces, Sterlings and Ferraris that are available on the West Coast Highway.
