Self-hypnosis, as you may have guessed, is when you hypnotize yourself. Despite its somewhat shady image, it is actually a good method of relaxation and stress management. It is far more practical than regular hypnosis as there is no need to have a trained hypnotist present. Here you will find simple instructions about how to make the most of this relaxation technique.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quiet room
  •
Comfortable space to lie down (or sit if that is more comfortable)
  •
Previous hypnotic experiences as you have to know what it is you are trying to achieve.
  1. Step 1

Go to the quiet room and either sit or lie down.

  2. Step 2

Close your eyes and try to get rid of any feelings of stress or anxiety. When you begin your mind will be flooded with thought. Don’t try and get rid of these; just partially focus on them until they go away.

  3. Step 3

Begin to release all the tension from your body, starting from your toes and move upwards. Feel each individual body part become lighter and just rest on the ground.

  4. Step 4

Take long deep breaths, feeling all your negative feelings released in the exhale and positive ones received on the inhale.

  5. Step 5

Take a moment to appreciate how relaxed you are. Now imagine yourself descending a flight of ten stairs counting each one as you go. Imagine that when you reach the bottom you will be completely relaxed.

  6. Step 6

Roll your eyes into the back of your head as this can enhance your trance-like state.

  7. Step 7

Now you can start to address any issues that may be causing you anxiety or stress. Begin to slowly repeat ways you want to improve your life. Always talk in the present tense avoiding negatives. For example, instead of saying “I don’t want to be stressed," say "I’m calm and relaxed." Continue repeating your statement as many times as you feel necessary.

  8. Step 8

When you are ready, slowly count upwards from zero to ten. Open your eyes and get back up slowly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you know what positive suggestions you are going to make to yourself before you begin.
  •
Picturing yourself in a place of nature, like a beach or forest, can often help relax you before you begin.
  •
If you are having trouble sleeping, complete Steps 1 through 5 and stay in that relaxed state. You should find that you will get to sleep much easier.
  •
If you are having problems it may help to either go and see a professional hypnotist or listen to a professional hypnotic recording.
  • Be careful not to get up to quickly afterwards as this may lead to dizziness.
  •
If it does not help you with your problems, seek professional help.
  •
Do not try and uncover memories, as this could lead to further problems and should be left to a professional.
  •
Self-hypnosis is no substitute for modern medicine. If you have a medical condition, go and see your doctor.
