How to usher in a church

Christ calls all church members into ministry. One way to minister to others is by being an usher. When a believer or non-believer comes to church, they should be greeted with Christ. That is, greet them with kindness, love and respect. People with gifts in hospitality, communication or encouragement may be good in this very important role.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Warmly greet everyone that arrives. Look for newcomers who may be apprehensive or who appear to be carrying a burden. Provide each person with a bulletin.
Step2
Be prepared to escort some members to their seats if they are in need of extra assistance.
Step3
During the service, you may be asked to sit in the back so that you can point out available seats to latecomers. Depending on church rules, ushers may be asked to refrain from seating guests during prayer or particular moments in the service.
Step4
Many ushers assist in the offering collection. Ushers must pass offering plates down each row, making sure everyone gets an opportunity to tithe. In some churches, offering baskets are extended into the aisles, rather than passed among the parishioners.
Step5
As the service ends, ushers may want to return to their position by the door to offer a friendly farewell and an invitation to return next week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be ready to direct guests to the restrooms.
