How to watch pirated DVD's on the pc

The PC has gone from small hobby computer to business computer to internet appliance. In many homes the PC is now a full-blown entertainment system. One of the things you can do with your PC is watch movies, either from DVD or downloaded from the Internet. While downloaded movies are popular, be aware that pirating DVD movies is illegal, do so at your own risk.

Instructions

Get a bittorrent program. The most popular peer to peer program for downloading pirated movies is bittorrent. Part of the reason why it's so popular is that there is no centralized bittorrent network. Each torrent site has their own "tracker" which puts peers in contact with each other. Previous peer to peer networks such as Napster were easily shut down by court order because they were centralized servers. Popular Bittorrent clients are bittorrent, uTorrent and Azureus (see Resources below).

Configure your router. The bittorrent program requires an open port, so if you're behind a home broadband router you must forward that port. To find the port number, look in the configuration dialogs of your bittorrent client. Some bittorrent clients also support "UPnP" configuration. If your router also supports this, try this option before forwarding the port manually through your router's web interface.

Find a movie on a bittorrent site. Bittorrent sites index and distribute .torrent files. These files are not the movie themselves, but rather a description of the movie file and a place to find a "tracker" which will put your bittorrent client in contact with other bittorrent clients that have the file. While downloading the file, you'll be sending the parts of the file you have to others, helping them download the file as well. The more "seeds" and "peers" a torrent has, the faster the download will be.

    • 4

Start the bittorrent download. You should leave this running in the background while it's downloading. The speed of the download will vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the speed of the others on the torrent. Once the download finishes, leave the program running as it helps others download the file and makes the torrent stronger.

Uncompress the files. Movies are often distributed in compressed archive files with filenames like .zip, .rar or .7z. To uncompress these files, download an archiver program such as WinRAR, WinZIP or WinACE. With these types of programs, simply open the archive file by double-clicking on it and click and drag the file from the archive to a folder on your hard drive.

Install a video player. While Windows comes with a video player (Windows Media Player), it often can't handle some of the formats used. The player that supports the most formats is the Video Lan Client (also known as VLC). Download the VLC client from the VLC website and install it.

Watch the movie. Double-click on the movie file to play it. If it doesn't open in VLC, right-click on the movie file and select Open With -> VLC.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're not prepared to pay large fines or serve jail time, DO NOT watch or download pirated DVDs. It is explicitly against the law to download or own such files. You will be doing so at your own risk.
