Step 1
Check the zippers.
Move the zipper up and down to make sure it works properly. It should operate smoothly and be the same color as the garment. -
Step 2
Check the hem.
Look for hand sewn hems that aren't visible from the outside of the garment. Look for a generous hem allowance in case you need to make alterations. -
Step 3
Check the belt.
Check the quality of the belt. A cheap cardboard belt is a sure sign of a cheap garment. -
Step 4
Check the buttons and button holes.
Buttonholes should be neatly finished and the buttons should be high quality and securely sewn onto the garment. -
Step 5
Check the stitching.
Stitching should be straight with an average of ten stitches per inch. -
Step 6
Inspect the fabric.
Hold the garment up to the light and look for flaws in the fabric. Learn to develop a feel for good quality fabric. To do this, visit expensive women's boutiques and touch the fabric on a variety of high end designer items. Now visit a lower end store and repeat the process. You'll soon be able to tell the difference by touch. -
Step 7
Inspect the lining.
The lining should drape smoothly and be hand stitched.
