An IOU chore card is a gift any mom will appreciate.

Mother's Day, which is celebrated in the United States on the second Sunday in May, is a chance for c children to do something extra special for Mom. A homemade "I owe you" Mother's Day card is a great option if you are working on a budget and cannot afford a large gift. Each day, the child's mom will select a special flower from the card, on the back of which is written one chore that the child will perform that day. The card is simple to make and children will enjoy coming up with the daily tasks.

Instructions

Fold a piece of heavyweight A4 paper in half, ensuring the edges meet neatly. The paper can be any color you choose, or it can be plain white.

Draw a flower pot on a piece of colored card stock. It should be roughly half the height of the folded card. Cut it out and decorate with felt-tip pens. Place a line of glue at the bottom of the flower pot and along the two sides, but not along the top, then glue the pot onto the bottom half of the card.

Draw seven flowers with stems on colored card stock, one for each day of the week. To make the card really bright, try to use a different color for each flower. Cut the flowers out and lay them face down on the table.

Think of lots of chores, it doesn't have to be just seven.

Write a list of seven chores, one for each flower. Some suggestions are: walk the dog, wash the car, fold the laundry, do the washing-up, tidy my bedroom, sweep the front porch and lay the table. Of course these chores will depend on the age of the child. For a younger child, more suitable chores might be: clear away toys, help tidy my room or help put the laundry away.

Write a different chore from the list onto the back of each flower, then place the flowers into the top of the plant pot.

Write a note inside the card, that explains the function of the flowers. For example, "Pick one flower each day and I will perform the chore on the back of the flower" or "Pick a flower for my daily chore".

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of picking flowers out of a flower pot, think of different ideas. For example, lifting kittens out of a basket or selecting presents from a sack. The process is exactly the same, the flowers and pot are simply substituted for something else.
