We have all had the experience of watching a movie so scary that we are completely unable to sleep. If you want to enjoy a horror film and avoid freaking out completely, there are a few easy steps you can take.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Scary Movies
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a popcorn and a soda, and eat and drink slowly. Food will keep you calm.

  2. Step 2

Before the movie starts choose something neutral in the movie theatre or living room as your reality check point, such as the back of someones head, or your own hands.

  3. Step 3

During the very scary moments on the movie, concentrate on your breathing. Breathe slowly in and out of your nose.

  4. Step 4

If you find your self being overwhelmed with panic immediately look at your already established reality check point. This will snap you back to a place of safety.

  5. Step 5

Look at one of the actors in the movie and concentrate on their acting. Imagine the movie set around them, the craft service table that's set up just out of view, all the cameras, sound equipment, and a cursing director. This will help you deal with anything horrific you are seeing.

  6. Step 6

Worse comes to worse, step out of the movie theatre for a moment. Breathe deeply until you are calm again, and go back in.

on 7/27/2009 One of the things that gets my heart racing are the numerous "startling" moments. When I think one is coming, I cover my ears. Reducing the sound makes the moment less scary.
