Choosing the appropriate backpack for your child is about more than just a look, feel or color. Combining just the right look with functionality and sturdiness makes for happy parents and happy kids. Read on to learn how to choose the right backpack for your child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Copy of school regulations
  1. Step 1

Know the school rules. Before beginning to shop for that perfect backpack, contact the school for a copy of their rules regarding backpacks. Some schools require clear backpacks or refuse to allow backpacks on wheels to be carried by the students. Despite the style of backpack your child may want to carry, these rules are the ones that HAVE to be followed.

  2. Step 2

Choose quality over price. Just because the backpack you find costs half of what the better quality backpack costs does not mean you are getting a great deal. Some cheaper backpacks are made with less than great quality materials, leaving the child with a busted zipper or torn fabric only a couple of months into the school year. Choosing a higher quality backpack can mean the difference between only buying one per school term and buying more than one.

  3. Step 3

Allow them the freedom. As long the the backpack is not harmful in any way (rude sayings or graphic images) the child should generally be allowed to choose the backpack look they love. The function of the backpack is what the parent should focus on, not the look of the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Choose the right size. As the child grows older, a larger backpack will be needed to carry all of the books needed for classes and homework. While a smaller backpack may be perfect for younger kids, older children will need to estimate the number of classes and book size when choosing the backpack. Taking along the number of books to the store will help to gauge the correct size.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remind the child to choose wisely as they will be carrying the backpack for many months to come.
