Instructions

    • 1

Get the dog into a cool, shady space and offer a bowl full of fresh water.

    • 2

Once he has lapped his fill, float some ice cubes in the water for him to slurp or chew on.

    • 3

Dampen a towel in cold water. Wring it out and place on the dog’s head, back and underside. Use several towels if necessary.

    • 4

Give the dog time to rest, regroup and remain in a shady cool space until he stops panting like a madman.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always hike with extra water for your dog. Give him your water if his runs out. Dogs will dehydrate quicker than humans.

  • If after a hot hike the dog seems listless, sickly and has shallow breathing, take him to a vet immediately. Dehydration kills quicker than you may think.

  • Do not shock the overheated dog by spraying him with an ice cold hose or letting him jump into a cold pool.
