Cavities are the dread of every child and adult. Cavities can lead to deeper problems with your teeth later on and involve countless procedures to fix the decay. Taking care of your teeth is easy enough, it just takes consistency and diligence.

Things You'll Need:

  • New Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Anti-Cavity Mouth Wash

    How to Avoid Cavities

  1. Step 1

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, after breakfast and before bed. Ideally, you should brush after every meal. When you brush, make sure to gently brush your teeth in small circles, with the brush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. If you brush too vigorously, you may cause gum damage.

  2. Step 2

Flossing is also important as tarter and food can build up in the cracks between your teeth and cause decay. You need to floss your teeth as often as you brush, but if you can only floss once a day, try to do it at night before you go to bed, so the germs and food particles will not sit in your mouth all night.

  3. Step 3

Remember to brush your tongue and insides of your cheeks, too. Harmful bacteria lives here as well. But use a different brush than you do for your teeth, otherwise you're just moving bacteria around in your mouth. Some stores sell specialized brushes for this that look nothing like a regular toothbrush.

  4. Step 4

Remember that your toothbrush only lasts for three or four months and then it needs to be replaced. On the box of the toothbrush, it will also tell you what to look for when your toothbrush needs replacing.

  5. Step 5

Cap off your brushing and flossing sessions with some anti-cavity mouthwash, which can be found most grocery stores.

  6. Step 6

Visit the dentist twice a year. Good hygiene is only the beginning and regular visits to the dentists for cleanings will keep your teeth healthy.
