If your textured fiberglass bathtub looks stained and blackened, chances are that oil, dirt and skin cells have becomed trapped in the textured ridges of the tub. Special care needs to be taken when cleaning a figerglass bathtub. Abrasives can scratch the tub. Bleach products can cause discoloration. Follow these steps to safely and effectively clean a stained textured fiberglass bathtub.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Borax
  • Stiff nylon brush
  • Elbow grease

Step1
Wet the bathtub floor thoroughly, then turn off the running water.
Step2
Sprinkle the tub with an even layer of borax. While it does not need to be a thick layer, it should cover the tub floor.
Step3
Dampen the nylon brush.
Step4
Scrub the bathtub in several different directions. Go toward the textured pattern, then against the textured pattern, then in circles. Pay special attention to more heavily soiled areas. Add small amounts of water as needed.
Step5
Run the water into the tub and continue scrubbing and rinsing the borax until it is all rinsed away.
Step6
If the tub still has stained areas, apply more Borax and repeat steps. Heavily stained tubs may need several cleanings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once your textured tub is clean, consider purchasing a mildew resistant vinyl bathtub mat to help keep it cleaner.
