Prana breathing is the most basic breathing technique used in yoga. Other breathing techniques can be more complicated and the Prana breathing exercise described here can serve as the foundation from which other yoga breathing branches off. This technique is not intended for daily breathing. See the steps below to make the most of your natural breathing process during your yoga practice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In a sitting position, sit up straight to maximize breathing space during yoga practice.

  2. Step 2

While inhaling, expand lungs as far as they possibly can go.

  3. Step 3

Raise clavicle (collarbone), shoulders and rib cage while inhaling.

  4. Step 4

Simultaneously, fill abdomen and gently push diaphragm lower while inhaling.

  5. Step 5

Fill lungs with air and hold for a moment before exhaling slowly.

  6. Step 6

Repeat as many times as desired.
