Dowsing in some form has been used for years to determine where to dig water wells, find lost coins or even to find ghosts! To dowse for spirits you'll use 2 L-shaped brass rods instead of the historic tree branch used in olden days to find water! Dowsing for spirits is based on measuring and reacting to electronic magnetic fields, just like the EMF meter in your ghost hunting kit. Unlike the EMF meter, however, the dowsing rods can offer a further means of communicating with ghosts around you. Want to learn how? Start here.

From Quick Guide: Paranormal Investigations
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dowsing rods available at any New Age bookstore, metaphysical shop or online
  1. Step 1

Get the feel of your dowsing rods. These medium-sized L-shaped brass rods will be held in your hands by the short leg of the rod. Do not place your thumb over the top of the rod or grip too tightly or it will effect the results you get.

  2. Step 2

Relax and breathe deeply. You must be centered in order to contact the spirit world. Focus your mind and do a prayer of protection. Remember, you want to protect yourself anytime you try to communicate with the other side, so envision yourself being made of white light, and ask God to protect you while you try to learn from the spirits around you.

  3. Step 3

Check out your environment. Try your first dowsing experience at a cemetery or haunted location so that you can get an idea of the results possible.

  4. Step 4

Walk with the rods loosely in your hands until they cross. This is an indication of high EMF and most likely the presence of a ghost!

  5. Step 5

Do a test. Set your "yes" and "no" parameters by asking the rods (or the spirits) to show you the "yes" position. Most often this will be when the rods cross in front of you. Then ask for the "no" position. This is most likely when the rods go in opposite directions.

  6. Step 6

Begin a conversation. Ask clear "yes" and "no" answer questions. Your rods should cross accordingly. If the rods point in a different way they may be trying to lead you to a clue that you can now focus on in your questions. Get as much information as you can while the spirit is communicating.

  7. Step 7

Always thank the ghost or spirit for communicating with you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Getting results from your dowsing rods may take time, so practice and give yourself plenty of opportunities to talk to the spirits.
  • Be sure you are well rested before dowsing. Dowsing, as any form of communication with the other side, is very draining, so be in peak condition before you go out.
