Teaching a horse to neck rein is not very difficult if done correctly. The benefits of teaching a horse to neck rein are great since neck reining is much simpler than 'plow reining' and can be done with only one hand. Read on to learn how to teach a horse to neck rein.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start partially neck reining your horse as soon as your next ride. To turn left, hold the reins in the right hand and cross it over to the left side of the horse until the right side rein is laying on the horse's neck.

  2. Step 2

Use your left hand to reach down and pull the left rein at the same time. Do the opposite to turn right.

  3. Step 3

Repeat this as often as necessary. Eventually you will be able to use either hand, cross over the neck and the horse will turn in that direction without having to pull with the opposite hand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repetition and persistence is key with teaching a horse to neck rein. Continue to follow the steps until both you and your horse neck rein without thinking about it.
