There was a time when choosing baby formula was as simple as picking up the can on the shelf. However, times have changed drastically. Today there are many choices for those in the market for baby formula. Here are a few tips to help guide you through those labels and ingredients.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Pediatrician
  1. Step 1

Check the FDA website. When choosing an infant formula, you can rest assured that all baby formulas are manufactured to strict FDA guidelines. The FDA has provided lower limits and upper limits for all nutrients, vitamins and minerals for baby formulas. If you have a questions about whether your choice meets these guidelines, check the FDA website and compare the label to the listing provided.

  2. Step 2

Ask your pediatrician. Pediatricians often have favorite formulas they will suggest to parents. These formulas may be more easily digested by baby, or cause fewer allergic reactions. Also, if your baby has a possible allergy to milk or soy, the pediatrician will be able to guide you toward an alternative baby formula.

  3. Step 3

Choose the method. There are three styles of baby formula, powder, liquid concentrate and ready to feed. The powder formulas are often the most convenient due to the portability of the powder. The concentrate needs to be refrigerated after opening and the ready to feed, is often more expensive than any other baby formula. Choosing which style is right for you and your baby is, most often, a trial and error situation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not leave ready to feed or concentrated formula out at room temperature. This will cause spoilage.
