Things You'll Need:

- Toothpaste
- Dental floss
- Dentist

Step 1
Visit your dentist. If you are suffering from bad breath it is probably caused by built-up bacteria. A routine cleaning will be your first step in avoiding bad breath. However, it might be something more serious that only your dentist can diagnose and treat. So head to the dentist for regular checkups and dental cleanings.

Step 2
Brush, brush, brush. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day--morning and night--is imperative if you want to avoid bad breath. Brushing your teeth will remove leftover food particles from your teeth and gum. If left there to decay, those particles contribute to bad breath.
-
Step 3
Floss. Floss between teeth at least once every day to get rid of even more leftover food particles. While you are at it, brush your tongue. Plaque and bacteria can grow on your tongue and cause that bad breath that you are trying so hard to avoid.
-
Step 4
Need another reason to quit. Smoking cigarettes, or any type of tobacco use for that matter, causes bad breath. You don’t see anyone kissing ashtrays, right? Avoid tobacco and gain a sweeter smile.
-
Step 5
Having a dry mouth can play a part when it comes to bad breath. If you find your mouth feeling extra dry, try sugar-free gum or breath mints. Up your water intake as well. This will help your mouth stay moist, which keeps bacteria at bay, helping you avoid bad breath.
-
Step 6
Foods such as garlic, onions and many spices foods are known for causing bad breath. As these are chemical causes within your body, covering it up doesn’t work well. You might want to avoid these foods on certain occasions--say, that first date you just landed with the hottie down the hall?
-
Step 7
If you have taken all of these steps to avoid bad breath and it just doesn’t seem to be working, talk to your primary care physician. Certain ailments can cause bad breath as well.
