The fear of falling and getting hurt often discourages children from trying to ride a bike. In the beginning stages of learning, it is difficult to maintain control and stability so falling down is usually a part of the learning process. However, the "grassy slope" method can help the child feel more in control, and it can prevent excessive falling. Read on to learn how to teach a child to ride a bike using the "grassy slope" method.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  1. Step 1

Check that the child can firmly place his or her feet on the ground when seated on the bike. If the child’s feet cannot touch, lower the bicycle’s seat.

  2. Step 2

Find a small grassy hill and hold the bike at the top of the hill while the child gets positioned on the bike’s seat.

  3. Step 3

Explain to the child that you will hold the bike until it starts moving. Make sure they understand that if the bike begins to wobble, they can stand up and put their feet down to stop the bike.

  4. Step 4

Have the child practice gliding down the hill without using the pedals. Do this a few times until the child is comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Raise the seat so that the child can practice pedaling down the hill. The child’s knees should be bent slightly when seated.

  6. Step 6

Have the child pedal down the slope a few times until the ride is smooth and controlled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have the child wear comfortable clothing as well as protection like a helmet and knee and elbow pads.
  • Be relaxed and calm so that the child doesn’t become more nervous.
