How to tame tangled hair

Are you one of those people whose hair turns into a tangled mess after shampooing? You’re not alone as many people suffer with tangles especially in winter months when the air tends to be drier, and as well, when the hair is permed. Here are a few tips to help you tame tangled hair.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
When you are shampooing your hair, don’t rub it and scrub it like you would an old shirt. When you do this, you are actually tying your hair in knots. Instead, gently message the shampoo into the hair strands and onto the scalp using the tips of your fingers and the palms of your hands. Rinse and repeat.
Step2
Use a quality conditioner that is for your hair type (oily, dry or damaged hair). Squirt a tbsp. or so into your hand and then rub your two hands together. Gently squeeze the conditioner throughout your hair, and do the hair close to the scalp as well. If you don’t, your body will excrete excess oil to make up for the missing pH balance.
Step3
Leave the conditioner in for two or three minutes and then rinse off with cool water.
Step4
Squeeze the leave-in moisturizing conditioner into your hands and gently message over all the hair shafts. Leave this in.
Step5
Use a wide-toothed comb and carefully comb the hair. If there still are tangles, divide them into strands and comb them by holding the strand close to the scalp with one hand and combing it out carefully with the other. Never start at the top of the head and just pull down when there are tangles because it will break the hair. Only comb straight down on de-tangled hair.
Step6
If at all possible, try to blow dry your hair less often, even every second washing because this action can be damaging to your hair, especially if it tends to be dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • The conditioner will thicken and strengthen each hair shaft making it easier to manage and less tangled with each use.
  • About every six to eight weeks, give your hair a hot oil treatment. There are several quality products available on the market.
  • Chemicals found in hair spray and perms tend to dry the hair shafts causing them to be thin, high in static and unmanageable--even breaking them. A good mousse will help to maintain hairstyle without the use of harsh chemicals.
