Instructions

    • 1

Warn a child certain behaviors will result in punishment while others will get rewards. Drawing on the wallpaper will mean punishment. Drawing you a cool picture on a piece of paper will mean it gets hung on the fridge.

    • 2

Make sure the child understands what he did wrong. Don’t just wrench away the crayons with no explanation.

    • 3

Talk about it. Ask the child why he chose to do such a thing. Ask him how he would like if someone did something like that to him. Ask him what he thinks the punishment should be.

    • 4

Pick a punishment that fits the crime. A kid who draws on the wallpaper may have to learn how to clean walls or, if that’s too advanced, do without crayons until he learns where to use them. A good bet for all crimes is taking away the TV.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make the punishment as quick, painless and immediate as possible. If you wait too long, the kid may forget what he did wrong. If you draw it out too much, you may cave in.

  • Don’t yell.

  • Don’t hit.

  • Don’t chain a child to the radiator.
