Keep in mind, your child does not want to be a bad kid. The most important thing in his mind is making you happy. Unfortunately, his impulses cause action before thought, and then he becomes angry for what he has done, and acts out even worse. Although it seems like he is displaying disregard for you, the truth is there is so much commotion going on inside his head, and he is simply trying to survive. Help him feel like he contributes to the family, rather than frustrates it, and that will become your reality.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Use behavior charts and chore charts to track accomplishments, goals, and consequences. Your child will respond better to seeing what is expected of him, rather than just hearing it and knowing it.
Step2
Be consistent. More than probably anything else, kids need boundaries and consistency. You must never give in because that sends a message that he can get away with things if he is persistent enough.
Step3
Communicate. Discuss his day and his feelings. Bond. Above all else, praise him for his hard work and accomplishments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dealing with a difficult child is extremely frustrating, but keep in mind, that frustration is being felt on both ends.
