Meet the Qualifications to Run for President

Since the Constitution of the United States was adopted, 42 people have served as President. What did all of these people have in common? Article II of the Constitution lays out the rules.

Instructions

    • 1

Be a natural-born citizen, according to Article II of the Constitution. But what that means exactly has been battled out in court and in the media. Some believe "natural-born citizen" means that you must be born on U.S. soil. But other interpretations argue that a person born to U.S. parents on foreign soil is still considered a natural-born citizen.

    • 2

Be at least 35 years old. This requirement is fairly cut-and-dry. Until your 35th birthday you are not eligible to be the next President of the United States.

    • 3

Be a U.S. resident for at least 14 years. This means the candidate must have an established residence within the U.S.

    • 4

Know your term limits. Under the 22nd Amendment, no person who has served as President for more than 6 years is eligible to serve again.
