Resting breath is space between active inhaling and exhaling. In yoga, this is part of the breath cycle. During the resting breath after inhaling, your body is taking the oxygen it needs. The resting breath after the exhale is to relax and ready yourself for the next inhale. Resting breath is a bit of a misnomer because your body is actually doing a lot in that time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a moment to begin breathing in and out slowly. Make sure you are breathing from your lower chest and stomach.

  2. Step 2

As you inhale, fill your belly with air. Once you have taken in all the air you need comfortably, you will be at your first resting breath. This may last for just a second, but master yogis can stay at this state for longer. Do not hold your breath; the resting breath should be comfortable and calming.

  3. Step 3

Exhale. At the end of the exhale, there is another resting breath before starting the cycle all over again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not hold your breath, inhale or exhale so you feel dizzy. If dizziness occurs, go back to your normal breathing. You should never feel light-headed. To get the most from your breathing, it advisable to take a yoga class where an instructor can help you through the steps.
