Do you want to hike for miles and set up camp in the wilderness with no one around? Then you will need to backpack. Here's some basic info to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sturdy boots
  • Backpack
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • First-aid kit
  • Water filter
  • Camp stove
  • Pot, bowl and utensils
  • Food
  • Thermal underwear
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Raincoat
  • Warm hat
  • Map
  • Compass
  • Toilet paper in plastic bag
  1. Step 1

Get in shape. Can you hike up steep and rugged terrain for 10 miles a day for several days? Can you do that while carrying 30 pounds or more on your back? Make sure you are prepared. In the wilderness, exhaustion can kill you.

  2. Step 2

Pack light. Outdoor recreation stores have everything you need for backpacking. Make sure everything is compact and lightweight--no cotton. If things get wet, you want them to not be heavy and to dry quickly.

  3. Step 3

Set up camp in a safe and protected place before dark and, if possible, near water. Your cooking area should be at least 30 feet from your tent. Do not keep any food or sweet smells inside your tent. Hang food from a tree at night. Dig a hole and bury your feces.

  4. Step 4

Always pack out what you pack in. Leave your site looking like you were never there.

  5. Step 5

Let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the area before you leave, and bring a map and compass. If you get lost, stay put and build a fire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try on your backpack in the store and make sure it fits your body. Line your pack with a garbage bag in case of rain.
  • As with any strenuous activity, make sure you are in good health and in good physical condition before pursuing.
