Things You'll Need:
- Resume
- Paper and pen
-
Step 1
Before you ever set foot into the interview, do your homework. Make sure you have copies of your resume or any other materials they may ask for. Make sure to re-read the job description and make note of how your experience aligns with what they are looking for in a candidate. Go to the library and check out a book of typical interview questions. Don't memorize answers, but familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions you might expect.
-
Step 2
Dress appropriately, but make sure you are comfortable in the clothing. If clothes are too tight, too loose, too long or too short you will feel more anxiety going into the interview.
-
Step 3
Smile. By making yourself look comfortable, your interviewers will be at ease and even if you are faking it at first, your anxiety should subside a bit.
-
Step 4
Take your time in answering questions. Pause before answering if you need to. If you are unsure of a question, it's better to ask for clarification. You don't want to get midway through your answer and realize you're off track. That will add to your stress.
-
Step 5
While the interviewer is talking, pay attention but also make sure you try to slow your breathing down. Take in air to your stomach, slow and steady. Deep breaths like this will help slow your heart rate down and reduce some of the physical and mental symptoms of nervousness.
-
Step 6
If they offer you a glass of water, take them up on it. Your nerves might make your mouth or throat dry, adding to the discomfort of the situation.
