Things You'll Need:
- Inline skates
- Safety gear (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards)
-
Step 1
Always make sure to wear the proper safety gear. No piece of equipment is more important than your helmet, but knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards help ensure a safe landing when you crash.
-
Step 2
To speed up, simply skate faster and with longer strides each time.
-
Step 3
To slow down, you have a number of options. The first is to lean your foot back to use the brake on your heel. This will be on one or both of the skates. To come to a less-abrupt slowdown or stop, you can simply stop skating and coast, or go off your current straight line by making wide curves out to either side. To come to an immediate stop, turn your skates 90 degrees to the direction you're currently going. This is recommended only for experts, and be aware that it usually results in a fall or crash when learning how to do it.
-
Step 4
To maintain your speed, simply work up to the speed you want to be at and then alternate between coasting and skating to maintain that speed.
