How to Shop for Computer Online

One of the best things about buying a computer online is the price and the second is not having to deal with pushy sales people. Yet, purchasing a PC online is not without risks, especially when using an unknown vendor. These tips can help you buy a computer online with confidence.

Things You'll Need:

  • Comparison shopping search engines
  • Computer manufacturer websites
  • Discount computer retailers
  • Local electronics ads
  1. Step 1

Evaluate the reputation of the merchant when the party is unknown. Reviews, if available, can be helpful as well as conducting a search on the name of the company plus the word “complaint.” Otherwise, a merchant listing on a prominent shopping comparison site is no guarantee of good policies and consumer satisfaction.

  2. Step 2

Avoid buying a computer online when there are doubts or confusion involving the warranty or return policy. Preferably, buy a new computer online from a retailer than honors at least a 30-day return policy, with the manufacturer warranty and responsibilities clearly stated. Verify the manufacturer warranty on their website.

  3. Step 3

Compare the make, model and technical specifications of a computer with the merchant’s website to ensure that no alterations from the standard model have been made, such as a smaller hard drive and less RAM. If changes are made, a discount should reflect accordingly. When confident that the computer is the same as that on the general market, investigate professional and consumer reviews from CNET, Consumer Reports and like resources.

  4. Step 4

Utilize at least three shopping comparison search engines before committing to buy a computer online. See the Resources listed for examples. Verify the bottom-line price, to include shipping, shipping insurance and taxes.

  5. Step 5

Compare your results with local advertised ads and local shopping services such as Shop Local. You may find it is more economical to buy a computer near home than online. Also investigate companies that are reputed to sell discount computer equipment, such as Tiger Direct and New Egg.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you’re in the market for an open box or refurbished model, these deals may be inconspicuously listed on the manufacturer’s website, discount computer stores or online auctions.
