How to Breathe Properly to Reduce Stress

Proper breathing has an amazing effect on one's stress levels. This notion seems counterintuitive because breathing is good for you. But improper breathing can actually make stress worse by keeping much-needed oxygen from the brain. Compare these breathing techniques with your habitual breathing style and see how close you are to a very natural and simple method of reducing stress.

Instructions

    • 1

When time and space allow it, be conscious of your breath. Mindfulness while breathing gives you an opportunity to focus on the natural, automatic effects of your breath. Simply breathing intentionally can have a calming effect on a nervous psyche.

    • 2

Breathe slowly and deeply whenever possible. Allow your stomach to feel like it is filling with air.

    • 3

Vary your breathing techniques by holding it for a few seconds at a time and exhaling for a slightly longer period than inhaling.

    • 4

Practice rapid, shallow breaths for 10 seconds at a time a few times a day to give your brain an oxygen boost.

    • 5

Don't forget to breathe when in a stressful situation. Holding one's breath unknowingly can have potentially damaging effects and cause tension.

    • 6

Learn about breathing techniques while practicing relaxation with yoga or tai chi. Practice them daily, even when you're not exercising.

    • 7

Count your breaths, 10 at a time, for a brief period of meditation everyday. If you lose count, you know you are distracted and can make a conscious effort to relax.
