How to Find Commonality with Anyone

Finding something in common with a stranger should not be an arduous task. Asking simple questions is a part of the process. Learning about people is the beginning of the journey.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Finding something in common with anyone suggests there is more to divergent lifestyles than meets the eye. Discovering common traits, opinions or beliefs among the diverse population lends credibility that humanity is more than the sum of its parts. Chief among finding common friendship is breaking down the layers until you get to the gist of who people are. For example, what does a farmer in Idaho, who had never left his state, have in common with someone from a city like New York, Chicago or Los Angeles?
Step2
On the surface, it would appear that there would be no commonality. However, in areas such as politics, family, movies or sports, there may be common ground. For example, the political arena might be a venue where these two would hold similar opinions and find common beliefs. Different people may hold an affiliation to one party and can agree along their respective party lines. Both may be well versed and would be able to have good debates. Whether they agreed or disagreed suggests that commonality could be found.
Step3
Additionally, the lifestyles between people of all walks of life can be linked in some way. The diversity between the different people is an illusion. Perhaps the people from the city have family that once owned a farm or still do. They may even have had friends that moved from the city to join a suburban or rural township to get away from the city life.
Step4
Another area of common ground is religion. The religious arena often links vastly different people. While talking about religion can be difficult sometimes because of people’s ardent views, there can be commonality. The offshoots of Christianity and the various other sects of religious affiliations can have some common ground for good healthy discussion.
Step5
Despite one’s background, there are a plethora of common attributes that can be found with differing people. Don't subscribe to the notion that someone cannot find common ground between people. There is always common ground if you are willing to pursue it.
Step6
On a smaller scale, widespread communication can be achieved if people were willing to get to know other people despite their backgrounds. Finding something to talk about to a stranger is easier than most realize. If silence ensued while you were initiating conversation, then you can always ask about what they do, where they grew up and a myriad of other questions. They may appear mundane or inane questions, but they are powerful questions to get the ball rolling. Finding something in common with another person can be a rewarding experience. Keeping an open mind that everyone deserves to have opinions that may differ with your own is important to having commonality with anyone.
