In the marketplace, ultra mobile computers or UMPCs have expanded to include products ranging from the size of a cell phone such as the Nokia 810 to sub notebooks like the Asus EEE PC to tablet PCs that function nearly as well or better than a full-sized notebook. Read on to learn how to choose a UMPC.
UMPC / sub notebook
Determine if your UMPC will serve as an alternative or backup to an existing notebook computer. For power users, or those without a notebook, a sub notebook style UMPC is often recommended with certain features as listed in the following steps.
VGA port for connecting to a monitor
Shop for a sub notebook style UMPC that has a manageable keyboard, at least two or three USB ports, an Ethernet port, a Wi-Fi card and a media card reader. Additionally, a VGA Out port allows you to hook your UMPC to a larger monitor if needed and the UMPC should include, or be upgradeable to, at least 1 GB of RAM.
USB flash drive
Base your storage space (hard drive or flash drive) decision based on UMPC usage, your level of tech savvy and the drive's pros and cons. A standard hard drive is preferable for novices who have several programs to install. Yet, a USB flash drive or SD memory card is not difficult and a pleasure for mobile use. Flash drives are lighter, faster and most UMPCs equipped with them can handle more rugged use. If opting for flash memory, verify the limit that the UMPC will recognize in GB.
Digital memory cards
Opt for a pocket-sized UMPC model if little typing and website browsing is expected, or if you are comfortable with thumb or peck typing. Otherwise, you will want to add a portable keyboard and not be one who easily succumbs to eyestrain on a 3 1/2- to 4-inch screen. While you can watch video, read email, check news and even blog with a pocket-size UMPC, most individuals who enjoy these gadgets, have a full-sized notebook for serious use.
