A double axel is one of the most difficult jumps for most skaters to master. Because it is launched from a forward edge and is landed on a back edge, the jump has two and a half rotations. Breaking the jump down into step by step components makes the double axel easier to master.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Build sufficient speed by performing several back crossovers. Alternately, some skaters will enter their double axel from a forward inside mohawk.

  2. Step 2

After you have built speed, glide on your back outside edge.

  3. Step 3

From the back outside edge, quickly step forward. Bend your skating knee in preparation for the jump. Pull your arms back with your elbows bent. This will help you propel your body up into the air.

  4. Step 4

Swing your free leg in front of you, keeping the knee bent. Bring your arms forward as your swing your leg in front of your body. This will launch your body into the air.

  5. Step 5

Pull your arms across your chest and cross your legs, with your skating leg on top of your free leg. Pulling your arms across your body will increase your spin.

  6. Step 6

Begin your rotation after your have pulled in your arms and legs. Rotate two and a half spins.

  7. Step 7

Touch down on your toe pick before gliding onto a back outside edge. Extend your free leg as you land.
