Despite one's several accomplishments in life, there will always be failures, and with those failures there's commentators. Now, sometimes friends or co-workers may give negative feedback, it doesn't mean that it is unconstructive; however, here are a few tips for coping with the overly nasty tongue lashings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • sense of indifference
  • impulse control

Step1
Know who your dealing with. Verbally careless people like this never respond this way some of the time, it's all of the time. If this person didn't have you to lash out on, it would surely be someone else. So be completely calm.
Step2
Develop thick skin. "Sticks and stones" is the old adage, and it's true. After following step one, your next natural reaction is to take everything that's being said with a grain of salt, because you...
Step3
Know the difference between constructive and unconstructive criticism. Constructive criticism is meant to give understanding and shed light upon one's shortcomings. People often forget that constructive criticism can discuss positive things as well. Constructive criticism is not intended to intimidate, discourage or ridicule a person, and if that is the blatant purpose of the criticism, then it becomes non-beneficial; if it's non-beneficial, then it should also be of no consequence to you. Just let it roll right off your back.

Tips & Warnings

  • After a while, if the person is still criticizing you, just walk them out. Chances are, if they are the verbally careless type, then they probably make a lot of apologies.
  • If this is a constant occurrence for you with people, seek support from family. If family is the problem seek out friends or possibly a therapist.
  • I urge you, please don't bicker with a bickerer, this always makes the situation worst and sometimes causes lasting grudges.
