There are six simple rules developed by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) that are recognized around the world as proper etiquette for offroad trail riding and mountain biking. Following and observing these rules will ensure you and those around you have a safe and enjoyable mountain biking and outdoor experience. These rules protect you, others around you, and anyone using the trail (such as hikers, persons on horseback, etc.) and also ensure responsible mountain biking.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mountain Biking Rule #1: Ride on open trails only - respect road and trail closures, do not trespass on private land, and obtain permits when necessary.

  2. Step 2

Mountain Biking Rule #2: Leave no trace - practice low impact cycling and be aware of trail conditions. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to impact by bicycles. Do not stray from an existing, maintained trail.

  3. Step 3

Mountain Biking Rule #3: Control your bicycle - Do not break concentration on keeping control of your bicycle. Breaking your concentration on biking may cause harm to come to yourself and to others.

  4. Step 4

Mountain Biking Rule #4: Always yield the trail - Announce your presence to others (cyclists, hikers, and others) ahead of you on the trail. Give advance notice to hikers ahead of you because they cannot always hear you approaching on your bicycle. Be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary to safely pass others on the trail (or to let others pass you).

  5. Step 5

Mountain Biking Rule #5: Never scare or spook animals - Startling an animal can be dangerous to you, others, as well as the animal.

  6. Step 6

Mountain Biking Rule #6: Plan ahead - Be familiar with all your equipment and keep it in good shape. Bring all necessary supplies with you for quick fixes, first aid, as well as your own nutrition and energy needs. And always wear a helmet and adequate safety gear.
