This article will explain how to clean the cavity of a chicken or a turkey

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Turkey or chicken

Step1
Remove all wrappings on the turkey or chicken
Step2
Remove all giblets (neck, heart, liver etc) from the cavity of the turkey or chicken. Also, check the neck area cavity for any giblets and remove them from there. Set aside
Step3
Place turkey or chicken in an upright position (will look like its standing on its neck). Run cold water through the cavity for several minutes. Occasionally pour the water from the cavity. After several pours and the water looks clear, flip the bird over to the neck cavity
Step4
Continue as above for the neck cavity. Running water into the cavity, pouring it out until the water runs clear. Prop the turkey/chicken up in the sink, neck down and let drain.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a spray nozzle available on your sink, use this.
  • As with all uncooked meats, once you have finished washing the cavity, be sure to thoroughly clean the sink and counter top. Then thoroughly wash your hands.
