If you have one of those moms who has everything, you might be stuck trying to think of a gift for Mother's Day. Instead of stopping at the store, try staying close to home -- and heart -- by writing a Mother's Day poem for her.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm. Think of special moments from your childhood, times you've shared with your mom, things she did for you, and why you love her. Write down how those moments affected you. Jot down everything you can think of: This is your inspiration for the poem.

    • 2

Look at what you wrote and pick out those things that truly stand out or are connected. See if any words rhyme. It's fine to write a free verse poem -- one without rhyme -- but many people find rhyming easier to work with. If no words rhyme but you want your poem to, come up with auxiliary or connecting words that can help connect memories. For instance:

On sunny summer days when I was small
I'd be playing outside just waiting for the call
To come inside for something freshly baked
I knew it would be good, because you knew just what to make

Do the same with other words, aiming for several stanzas.

    • 3

Once you have a few stanzas, fix them in a logical order. For example, you could start with a childhood memory and end with something you remember from last month.

    • 4

Add a title that captures the overall feeling of the poem. Even something as simple as "For Mom" can work, although something more personal might be better.

    • 5

Print the poem out on nice stationery, or write it in pen if you have decent handwriting. Hobby and stationery stores have quality, colorful paper that is ideal.

    • 6

Pick a picture frame for your poem. Take your finished work and cut it to fit the frame. Read the poem over breakfast on Mother's Day, then hand it to your mom.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't over think it. Just pick a few happy memories and let the emotion flow.

  • You don't have to make it rhyming. Do whatever feels right to you.

  • Be sure to sign the poem.

My Mom loves poetry so writing a poem just for her is a wonderful gift. I'm sure most women are this way. I think it would be a good idea for not only Mother's Day, but birthdays and other holidays also.
