Things You'll Need:
- Newspaper
- Gem in questioned
-
Step 1
If the stone is not mounted, turn the stone upside down and place it on a piece of newspaper. Diamonds tend to refract light so if you can read the print, chances are it's a fake.
-
Step 2
Diamonds are known for conducting heat. Breathe on the stone in question. If the stone stays foggy for about 4 seconds chances of that precious stone being real, is slim to none. Beware, some capped cubic zirconium based with real diamond and moissanite will pass this test.
-
Step 3
Observe the mounting on the ring. If the setting is good quality and it does not have the initial CZ (cubic zirconium) there is a possibility stone could be real.
-
Step 4
Look at the color of the diamond. If it's perfectly clear chances are it is not a true diamond. Diamonds generally have a slight yellow tent, thus they are set in yellow gold to disguise the color better.
-
Step 5
Cost of the diamond can tell you many things. If you are offered a large stone for a good price, chances are it's not real.
-
Step 6
If you have any doubt, I recommend you to take your jewelry to a jeweler. They can perform a more thorough test to insure your precious stone is real.

on 10/7/2009 The fastest way to tell if it's a real diamond is to take a sharp object such as a straight pin or a needle and try to scratch the surface of the stone. If it scratches, it isn't real. If it doesn't, it's probably a diamond. Diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Only another diamond can scratch a diamond.
